Some of the first botanical gardens in the world were founded in London and the Vatican in the 1500’s in order to conserve medicinal plant collections. Here in the Amazon, indigenous peoples have thousands of years of experience with natural medicines derived from the pharmacy that surrounds them in the forest.

In the Omaere Ethnobotanical Park, Teresa Shiki, an indigenous Shuar woman, prepares natural medicines. She has more than 30 years of experience in the natural medicine that she learned from her mother and grandparents, and all ingredients come from the plants of Omaere and the region. Most medicines are prepared upon request to adjust to the needs of the patient and because preparations are perishable.
